WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?
The purpose of chiropractic care is to optimize the function of the nervous system. The nervous system is the master control system of the entire body. It transmits signals to and receives information from every cell, tissue and organ of the body. Unfortunately physical stress (i.e. birth, falls, poor posture), chemical stress (i.e. poor nutrition, drugs, environmental toxins), and mental / emotional stress (i.e. work, money, family) cause joints of the spine to stop moving properly or become stuck. This creates interference within the nervous system which may be symptom-free or manifest as pain, numbness, weakness, indigestion, constipation, problems concentrating, trouble breathing etc. Nervous system interference from spinal misalignment is called a ‘subluxation’ and chiropractors remove and prevent subluxations.
Chiropractors use safe, gentle, and specific adjustments to realign the spine. This may be done using their hands (Diversified / Manual Technique), an instrument (The Activator), or the movement of the table (Drop Pieces).

An adjustment:
-
Increases mobility
-
Reduces pressure on the joints, muscles and nerves
-
Allows the spine to return to its proper position and function

Uncorrected subluxations may result in spinal degeneration (a.k.a osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease). The elimination of subluxations results in decrease pain and symptoms and improved bodily functions. Chiropractors balance and align your spine to take pressure off of nerves so that your body can heal itself and so that you can live life to your full potential!

Everyone with a spine should be checked by a chiropractor whether it is for symptom relief or wellness care … just like everyone with teeth should be checked by a dentist. We check people of all ages, from newborns to seniors. We take great pride in seeing families get well and stay well together.
After starting treatment with Dr. Amanda I became a true believer in the benefits of chiropractic care and managing my health and wellness holistically. I have an improved sleep pattern, I have returned to the activities that I had to stop (running, kick-boxing, bike riding). Besides my physical exercise I have been able to manage my work demands, having had difficulty due to pain with driving long distances, sitting for long periods of time, and working at my computer.

WHAT TO EXPECT?
At Balance Chiropractic we go beyond crisis care and help to foster healthy lifestyles. We work with you to help you achieve your health and wellness goals. This process begins with your initial visit.
Both of our kids have been seeing Dr. Amanda & Dr. Matt to get adjustments and most importantly to have their spine in good shape. As we all know, you don’t need to get hurt before seeing a chiropractor and Julie is a good example as she never waited to get hurt to see a chiropractor. Also, our kids use to have many ear infections but since they’ve been treated by a chiropractor, those infections are not part of their lives anymore.

The Initial Visit
You may either download the appropriate Health History form before you arrive or arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to fill it in. Parking and the entrance are around the back of the building. Please dress comfortably and allow 30-45 minutes for your appointment.
Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by our front desk staff. Dr. Matt or Dr. Amanda will then discuss the nature of your visit, your health history, and your health goals. A thorough neurological, orthopaedic, and chiropractic examination will be performed. This will include an assessment of your posture, gait, balance, ranges of motion, strength, reflexes, sensation, and spinal function. You will be sent for spinal x-rays if necessary. An adjustment may or may not be performed on this visit.

The Report of Findings Visit (2nd Visit)
At your second visit your chiropractor will spend 20 minutes explaining the health of your spine, treatment plan, and what you can do at home to speed up the healing process. Models and charts will be used and all of this information will be written down for you to take home. The appropriate adjustments will then be performed (if necessary).

Adjustment Appointments
During a typical adjustment appointment your chiropractor will check and adjust your spine and extremities (i.e. ankles, knees, wrists) as needed using his or her hands (Diversified / Manual Technique), an instrument (The Activator), or the movement of the table (Drop Pieces). The Thumper or other soft tissue techniques may also be performed.

Progress Examinations
Progress examinations are preformed every 12 to 24 visits. During these appointments your chiropractor will perform similar tests as your initial visit for comparison. These visits take 15-20 minutes, but are the same price as an adjustment appointment.
I have been receiving chiropractic treatments from Dr. Amanda since I was 16 days old. My rough birth and time spent laying crooked in Mommy's tummy hurt my neck and back. I had trouble turning my head and feeding and I cried a lot! Dr. Amanda is very kind and gentle with me and is doing a great job fixing me up. I love coming to my appointments and feel so much better!

CHILDREN & CHIROPRACTIC
"As the twig is bent so grows the tree."

Spinal problems can begin even before a child is born if he or she is in an unnatural position (i.e. breech, transverse lie, facial presentation, occiput posterior). There is a lot of stress (compression and/or traction and/or torsion) placed on an infant’s spine during birth (labour and delivery). Activities such as learning to lift their head, sitting, crawling, walking, and of course all the bumps and falls in between can lead to vertebrae misaligning (a.k.a. subluxations). Subluxations interfere with the nerve signals to different cells, tissue, organs, and systems of the body. Chiropractic adjustments correct these misalignments to remove pressure from the nervous system, eliminate symptoms, and prevent future problems (i.e. osteoarthritis). Chiropractic adjusting techniques are modified to fit a child’s age, size, and unique spinal problems. For example, with a newborn baby `sustained contact` adjustments are used. This type of adjustment involves about the same amount of pressure you could place on your eyeball or a tomato. The Activator instrument (on a low setting) and Drop Pieces are often used with children. Children can benefit from chiropractic care before they are even born by having a mother who receives prenatal chiropractic check-ups and adjustments to ensure that her nerve system is working at its most optimal level.

When children are out of alignment they may develop symptoms such as:
-
Infantile Colic (unexplained extreme fussiness)
-
Torticollis (wry neck)
-
Scoliosis (curvature of the spine)
-
Frequent Spitting Up
-
Reflux
-
Frequent Colds
-
Sleep Problems
-
Preference of Feeding from One Side
-
Poor Appetite
-
Chronic Tonsillitis
-
Chronic Ear Infections
-
Allergies
-
“Growing Pains”
-
Skin Problems (i.e. Eczema, Acne)
-
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
-
Developmental Delays
-
Learning Disabilities
-
Trouble Concentrating / Focusing
-
Breathing Problems (i.e. Asthma)
If your child is experiencing any of the above symptoms please bring them to our office to have them checked. Drs. Amanda & Matthew Ostrowski are the parents of two small daughters and LOVE working with children. Balance Chiropractic is very child-friendly with a change table, toys, and a treasure chest!
When I became pregnant I continued to see Dr. Matt to help my changing body adjust. I experienced no pain in my back or legs throughout my entire pregnancy. When my daughter was born I decided to give her a positive start to a healthy life by taking her to visit Dr. Matt as well.

PREGNANCY & CHIROPRACTIC
During pregnancy is a great time to begin or continue with your chiropractic care. Imbalances and misalignments within the spine become extra stressed as the body rapidly changes and grows. As a result, a large portion of women experience headaches, neck, back, and leg pain during this time. Chiropractic is a natural (drug-free), safe, and effective form of treatment to prevent and relieve the common discomforts of pregnancy. Chiropractors get to the root of the cause, rather than merely masking the symptoms. The chiropractic techniques are tailored to your ever changing body and special pillows are used for extra comfort. Adjustments by a chiropractor reduce spinal nerve stress allowing your pelvis and uterus to function at their maximum potential. Chiropractors work with the pelvic muscles, joints, and ligaments throughout pregnancy to restore a state of balance for an easier, safer delivery.
Chiropractic care has been proven to reduce the need for pain medications and medical interventions during delivery and reduce labor time! Both of the chiropractors at Balance Chiropractic have received additional training from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) in the care of pregnant women and children and would love to be part of your prenatal team!
